New and Better…

After the inspirational day with  George Couros, I had to try a “new and better” way to reflect on my thinking and the thinking of my colleagues. My goal…to become more of a producer and less of a consumer, and to focus my reflections.

  1. Good job with the Storify, Nick! It’s such a great tool for collating tweets and making the conversation visible. I appreciate some of the points you highlighted, (and Donna Fry did well with this, too – though to be fair, she also included several of my tweets…*cough…*cough…).

    A few points regarding your post: First, I like that you write about seeing challenges as opportunities. I believe this to be the essence of the Innovator’s Mindset. We have a plethora of opportunities in SGDSB. The question is how innovative we are willing to be and if we have the fortitude to make some important decisions and take on some big risks. I’m curious to know what this looks like in each of our schools. Opportunities for sharing are awesome.

    Secondly, and in my mind the most vital point, is recognizing that learning and our learners should take priority over managing and administrivia. I wonder how much this sentiment goes against the traditional thinking of many of our colleagues. However, this is what I’ve said to you before: we get stuck in the “data-driven, build capacity mindset” and it becomes easy to drown ourselves in paperwork and forget that we are working with kids. That’s what we do. George Couros made that point very well. The challenge, (or opportunity!) is that out administrators have multiple roles that are divided in other schools. So, how can we delegate, promote leaders, share strengths and spread tasks so we are running optimally?

    Finally, your point about student brains was interesting. I definitely think that the use of video games, phones, and always-connected lifestyles has changed how kids process information. So many of them are visual and kinesthetic. I wonder if our pedagogy matches those learning styles as often as they should.
