Thought of the Week: HAPPY EDUCATION WEEK! A Celebration of Achieving Excellence: Promoting Well-Being
The Ministry Renewed Goal for Education for Well-Being:
All children and students will develop enhanced mental and physical health, a positive sense of self and belonging, and the skills to make positive choices (Achieving Excellence).
Here are some of the brainstorming that was done regarding the definition of Well-Being:
- -whole child, development, growth,
- -removal of all barriers that prevent students from learning
- -the outcome of a set of behaviours that lead to self-efficacy, resilience and many positive attributes
- -not about the mental health piece
- -climate/conditions under which students come to school – caring adult, access pathway of support, healthy climate supporting well-being
- -not just mental/physical
- -interconnection between student well-being and student achievement – see themselves as learners, develop resilience and efficacy – need to get this synergy
- -valued, respected and safe, grab their heart,
What is your definition of and level of understanding regarding Well-Being? Are you holding Well-Being and Student Achievement are inseparable?
Health and Safety Reminders: OPHEA Guidelines
When staff are planning for an activity (curricular or co-curricular), a reminder that they must check the OPHEA Safety Guidelines first. These guidelines help them to ensure that all of the proper equipment and safety precautions are in place for the students. It is demonstrating due diligence and a focus on safety. They can be accessed at
Safety is always first!
Dr Jean Clinton – I am really hopeful that you will champion the Dr. Jean Clinton event all this week when you have parents and staff together. In some cases staff are apparently not yet aware of this event – please, please, please discuss this and truly encourage everyone to attend! Let’s try to create some excitement about this in every one of our communities! Thanks to everyone!
Criteria for Effective Staff Meetings – We are practicing the Assessment for Learning Framework with our staff meeting success criteria. I am asking that you apply this criteria to one of your staff meeting agendas with a critical friend.
- Working in teams, apply the criteria to you staff meeting agenda.
- What feedback would you give yourself? Your partner?
- Based upon the feedback, what is your next goal?
- Add to/enhance the success criteria based upon your thinking.
We will bring our final success criteria to our PD session on June 6. Thanks everyone!
TPAs – Our new process is to send all TPAs (printed and signed) to the board office (Val Nakini) by June 10th.
Sharing of Space – Just a reminder to engage in these meeting with your partners as you begin planning for next year. Please evaluate the extent to which you achieved your goals for this year and begin to think about what you want to work on next to move further towards integration. A great question that always comes up is the use of the gym and how this is balanced between the two organizations in the best interest of students!
