Thought of the Week: Hillary and I attended the School Board and DSSAB meeting last week. There were several speakers from the Ministry of Education in attendance and who spoke of the future and of the notion of full integration of schools and centers in our hubs. We have not spoken a great deal about this in the past year, however we need to return to this notion of full integration and of how you are championing and modelling this in your schools. Each of you who have a center in your school have a goal for this year – have you met it? What other areas of the Sharing of Space tool did you make improvements in? How are you authentically working together? Do you know what the Child Care/Nursery School licence says for your building so that when you tour parents around you can tell them/show them this licence (it is by the door in every center)? I am hopeful that the answer is YES! If not, please find out! For those of you who are co-located with a Best Start Center, how are you including the staff of the center into the work that you do?
Some pieces for us to think about – especially as we are beginning to plan for next year. Please review the Sharing of Space with your partners at your final “end of school” meeting and set your goals for next year. A suggestion might be to have a monthly meeting, instead of three times per year. This is a best practice that is happening in many schools in our province.
Health and Safety Reminders: Clarification of the role of the Principal
Two weeks ago I indicated that participation in your Occupational Health and Safety Inspections was an important part of your role. I wanted to clarify – while it is a very important part of your role, it is not a requirement under the act. The Worker Representative(s) is/are responsible for carrying out this duty. As a school board, we request that you participate as we know that this is good practice as a leader- to be informed, to show your due diligence, to ensure that the inspections are happening once per month as per the set out schedule. It is advisable to follow the schedule that you set out at the beginning of the school year as closely as possible as this demonstrates your commitment to Occupational Health and Safety – especially as this is law! What other ways are you demonstrating this commitment? How are you showing your due diligence and emphasis on Occupational Health and Safety so that your due diligence does not ever come into question?
Pearson Efficacy – We will engage in the final one hour session of the Efficacy Review Brainstorming on Monday, May 30, at 3:30. Please make every effort to attend as your voice needs to be heard as we plan for the future.
TMT – Jody and Sara will share this week – little time for anything else.
PD Day – June 6 – Our Elementary Principal Meeting will take place at GOPS. We will begin at 9:00 and end at 3:30. Please be prepared to provide feedback on the Effective Staff Meeting Criteria (noting for us your enhancements), link this to your PD Day artifacts and our criteria for effective evidence, and share your slides from your Inquiries with us. We will do this in small groups. We will then engage in some planning for next year.
Carried Over from Last Week
NTIP – A reminder to ensure that you have met with your NTIP teachers to update their Individual Strategy Form and the PD Form. The completion of these templates is a requirement for the successful completion of NTIP (to receive the NTIP designation). Please ensure that you are paying special attention to these processes as they are critical for these teachers. These must be sent to Shelley by June 10. A reminder that all TPAs, including NTIP also need to be completed and signed off by June 10. As you know, each NTIP teacher requires two Performance Appraisals. The feedback in these appraisals is critical to their growth; as teachers move from school to school, it is imperative that we engage fully in the NTIP processes to support growth and development of new teachers.
Criteria for Effective Staff Meetings – We are practicing the Assessment for Learning Framework with our staff meeting success criteria. I am asking that you apply this criteria to one of your staff meeting agendas with a critical friend.
- Working in teams, apply the criteria to you staff meeting agenda.
- What feedback would you give yourself? Your partner?
- Based upon the feedback, what is your next goal?
- Add to/enhance the success criteria based upon your thinking.
We will bring our final success criteria to our PD session on June 6. Thanks everyone!
Sharing of Space – Just a reminder to engage in these meeting with your partners as you begin planning for next year. Please evaluate the extent to which you achieved your goals for this year and begin to think about what you want to work on next to move further towards integration. A great question that always comes up is the use of the gym and how this is balanced between the two organizations in the best interest of students!
