Happy New Year and Welcome Back!  I hope that your holidays were filled with relaxation and time for family  and good friends.  

Thought of the Week:  New Beginnings   Over the break I enjoyed some time to catch up on some reading. One of the books that inspired me was given to me by Marc Paris entitled, In Case of Fire, by Spencer Beach.  This is the story of a Canadian man who is a burn survivor turned motivational speaker – and honestly, his courage is inspirational.  Spencer was removing flooring in a home with a harsh chemical that ended up being ignited when the furnace in the home started – resulting in a massive explosion and a chemical fire. This is his story – the hardship, the celebration, and of how he “found harmony with the trauma of the fire and its aftermath”.  It made me truly think about what is important in life, our ability to find strength and resilience in the face of what seems to be insurmountable hardship, and the importance of safety, of our safety training, and of how we need to be relentless about safety in both our  personal and professional lives.  We need to take safety seriously each and every day, and as Spencer speaks about, create a culture where we ensure that we take control of potentially dangerous situations.  New Year’s offers new beginnings – I continue to challenge each of us to think about and to set goals about what we are going to do differently in this new year. Wishing you success in achieving these goals.  (do read the book…I hope that it inspires you the way that it inspired me).

Updates/Reminders

Health and Safety Act Reminders:    

  • WellNet Deadline – Please remind those who have outstanding courses to complete that the deadline is January 11, 2016.
  • Emergency Plans – All Emergency Plans (including Fire Plans) need to be reviewed with the entire staff by January 29 (board policy).

Thursday Morning Teleconference – As we are together face-to-face on Friday, we will cancel our Thursday Morning Teleconference for this week.  We will resume next Thursday, January 14 with our first evidence sharing session.

Sharing of Space:  A reminder to be booking your Sharing of Space check in meeting with your partners in the building.  At these meetings the goals that you set in August should be assessed for success and next steps, and new goals set. You should also be conducting an assessment to determine if there are challenges (and celebrations) for both parties.  This formal communication is a critical step in moving us forward toward full integration. Please have the Sharing of Space document available as the tool to guide the conversations.

School Learning Plans – Please have these posted to your school VLE site by February 1, 2016.  Thanks everyone!

SGDSB Professional Development Calendar – This calendar will be the primary tool for booking and communicating professional development.  It is located under Public Folders, Calendars, and PD Sessions. It is open to all staff.

EQAO Session in February – When Lorraine was visiting, she spoke with several of you about having a session in February with  her.  This has been booked for February 19, from 10:00-2:30 at GOPS.  This session will provide participants with a deeper understanding of the contents of EQAO Primary and Junior assessments, the relationship between questions and the curriculum as well as information about the scoring process.   Knowing more about this content will be beneficial in interpretation of evidence from the assessments and for school improvement planning.  Participants will be given tips on administration, discuss test-taking strategies and engage in hands-on activities.  Bring your questions for the EQAO staff!  This is open to all teaching staff – voluntary in nature.

LLI Session – This has been booked for March 9. It is a videoconference.  Please be sure to have the surveys completed by the end of January, and to have staff commit by January 15.

Dr Jean Clinton Sessions – A Regional Parent Reaching Out Grant was submitted by SGDSB, SNCDSB and Brass Bell to have Dr. Jean Clinton visit our region to work with parents and possibly staff.  Funding has been approved and the arrangements are in the works.  Dr.Clinton will be speaking with parents in each community during Education Week (May 2-5). More details will be coming, however we are asking that you plan to incorporate her visit into your Education Week Activities, and that you schedule your School Council Meeting to correspond with her speaking engagement. Much more will come however I wanted to give you a heads up – we need to encourage as many parents as possible to attend this event!!  Please begin to share the links to her videos  some of which can be found at http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/childcare/positive.html.  Through your support, we believe that we can make this event a hugely attended session!!!  Thanks for your patience as we organize the final details and get them out to you!

OSR Management Guideline – The Board Policy Committee will meet after the Inaugural Board Meeting (in the new year). This policy will then hopefully receive approval.  Please be communicating these MG changes to your secretary as this will impact them. It is my hope that by September  2016, all of our OSRs will follow the format outlined in the document.

ECE Appraisal – Now that sanctions are done, we are seeking volunteers to pilot this process and document. Please let me know if you have a volunteer in your school.
